Time for open, blatant honesty. I’m nowhere close to a power user for Excel. I’ve been teaching myself how to do more and more with it, but I am still dabbling in basic/beginner level tasks. Even without that knowledge and experience, I do know that pivot tables are a very powerful tool for analyzing and using data.
The Excel 12 blog gives some great details on this specific task in the latest version. I’ll be reading through the posts as time allows, but wanted to share them with everyone if you weren’t aware that they were available.
- PivotTables – overview of improvements in Excel 12
- PivotTables part 2: Creating summary reports made easy
- PivotTables part 3: More clickable, more compact, and nicely styled
- PivotTables part 4: Task-oriented UI, or “improvements the Ribbon affords us”, and some bonus talk about dialogs
- PivotTables V: Context menus
- PivotTables VI: – Sorting and filtering
- PivotTable VII: – Conditional formatting gets even better, or visualizing your data in PivotTables
- PivotTables VIII: “Defer Layout Update”, or adding multiple fields in one fell swoop
- PivotTables 9: Great support for SQL Server Analysis Services
- PivotTables X: Server formatting, translations, member properties
- PivotTables 11: Key Performance Indicators, Actions, and Named Sets
