Playd For Free
It’s not very often that we come across freebies in this greedy consumerist world, and the words ‘gaming’ and ‘magazine’ are about as difficult to attach to it as would be the phrase ‘one million dollars’. Here though, in glorious PDF format, is a group from the UK dedicated to bringing you an old-school, new media feel packed with previews, reviews and editorials…all for free.
Weighing in at a whopping 83 pages, Issue 5 of this bi-monthly tome is now available for download at the official site, as are back issues. In their own words:
Play.d Magazine is a freely downloadable games magazine which is viewable in PDF format. We aim to bring you upto date news, previews, reviews and interesting articles every 2 months. Our aim is to create a professional quality magazine that everyone can download and read. Over the coming issues we hope to improve our design and quality of writing to achieve our goals.
The feature I like? RePlayd. Too often I think that review sites pass judgement on a game after playing it for a few hours and writing up some ascerbic, wittily biting commentary. The game then gets shoved in a drawer somewhere, never again to make an appearance in the posts and pages of whatever publication took gleeful joy in nnit-picking it to pieces. The staffers at Playd seem to shun that approach and recognize that games can have intrinsic value and enjoyability years after first release (hey, I play games that are 10 years old more than anything recent). They have a retro gaming section (RePlayd) looking at games of yesteryear, that is like a pixellated trip down memory lane.
Go and have a look, perhaps you’ll find a new regular read and even if you don’t….it’s not like it cost you anything right?
