Poker Interest

I’ve had very little poker interest lately. In playing, that is. I’ve only sat in on one game in the past two and a half weeks or so, and ended up leaving that one early. There’s too much else going on for me to fully involve myself. With poker, and with a lot of other things, I’m usually either fully immersed or not at all. That flux again. Cycles. I believe there’s a game tonight that I may drop by and see how it’s going.

For a while I thought part of it was that I usually deal at the casual game I go to. I can’t stand to sit around while the slower people shuffle and deal, and would rather just do it all myself to keep it going quickly. Maybe if I relaxed I would enjoy it more, though even at the bigger game I used to go to all the time I felt a little bored near the end there. I don’t know.

I know this is something even pros go through. You hear many of them talk about how they don’t play nearly as much as they used to once they get to the point where they don’t have to anymore. Turn on Poker After Dark and odds are they’ll be talking about golf. High Stakes and they’re more worried about their prop bets than what the cards are doing.

Maybe I need some props. Start betting on who can play the most hands in a row. The 7-2 rule where if you win with 7-2 everyone at the table has to pay you a certain price. Fireworks. Hmm.

Anyone else go through these extreme swings?

Oh I’m definitely with you. I am compulsive in everything I do: writing, poker, drinking, etc.

I have a hard time caring about a subject once the initial compulsive phase is over.

My lack of care is compounded once I start losing money.

In terms of poker, breaking my cycles of apathy has a lot to do with stakes and/or the type of game.

I am very disinterested playing for low-medium stakes so it is hard when I do. I usually end up losing more money at low stakes because I don’t seem to care about the money lost. And I gamble more on draws and bluffs then playing solid poker.
