Poker freakonomics
Just a brief note here. I’ve been listening to the audio version of Freakonomics (thanks Paul) and really loving it. It’s about applying the tools of economics to questions that are a little less…boring. The authors keep a blog over here.
I noticed that they’ve got a recent posting putting out a call for poker data. The responses so far seem to be along the lines of "I can get you that data, but it’ll cost you." Kind of a drag, but not unexpected, I guess.
So, if there are any altruistic poker players with massive amounts of data from online hands, go visit the Freakonomics guys…maybe you can help.

As a poker player, it would be advantageous to know if being able to read tells can shift lady luck my way. I’ll bet they are comparing the winning rates of particular hands when a player can read tells (in a face-to-face game) as opposed to when they can’t (in an online game). Might be worth knowing.
FYI, the link to Audible doesn’t work, since Audible URLs aren’t normally bookmarkable. They’re tied to your browser session.
If you use Firefox, there’s a Greasemonkey script to add bookmarkable links (http://roub.net/xul/greasemonkey/audible.user.js), among other things, to Audible pages. In the meantime, a working link to Audible’s version of Freakonomics is: http://www.audible.com/adbl/store/welcome.jsp?entryRedirect=/store/sharedTitle.jsp&entryParams=^ProductID~BK_HARP_000995^
