Today marks the day when an African American man will take the oath of office: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." With those words, President-elect Obama, will become the 44th President of these great United States. That is exciting.WOW!
Today is one of those days that people will talk about as they get older. They will be able to tell people "where they were" when Barack Obama was sworn in as President of the United States of America. I will be with my students watching the Inauguration on television. Where will you be today during this historical inauguration? Are you in DC? Please share your story, your thoughts!
I am very excited about the historical ramifications of this day. For years to come, maybe even centuries beyond us, people will be talking about this historical moment in our country. It is a good day to be alive. The significance of the day is monumental for African Americans, but it is monumental for all people of this great nation. It is another barrier that has been demolished and people, big people and little people (children), can actually believe for the impossible. Things that seemed difficult yesterday don’t seem so insurmountable today. For me, today is about dreaming big. And believing in those dreams even when you can’t see it in the natural. It is about faith to believe for things that you desire. I am hopeful as an American citizen that things will get better. I am convinced however that it is not up to one man. Despite the gravity of this day, President Barack Obama can not change this country alone. It begins with each of us as citizens committing to be part of the solution rather than being a problem.
No matter what your political views are, today is a day to put those things aside, even if only for a moment. To reflect on the accomplishment of a man. It is a day to hope for the future of our nation. It is a day to remember! May the peace of God rest over our nation today!
