Though many folks don’t appreciate the amount of cup drivers that keep showing up in the Busch series events, there is the perspective that without Cup drivers in the events, ratings and attendance would not be as good as it is.

Cup regulars have been a mainstay in this secondary series through out the history of this series and help contribute to the new drivers cutting their teeth, competing against the big guns of NASCAR.

NASCAR is looking at how to better develop the Busch, soon to be Nationwide series and how to make it so the 2nd tier drivers have a better chance at being competitive for a championship.

Bruce, I understand what you’re saying, and I’ve acknowledged those facts all along. But, the point is that while it may be good for ratings and such for the short-term, what does it really accomplish in the long run?

In the grand scheme of things, what it does by sporting half of the field in their “minor league series” with the top tier drivers in the business, it turns it into nothing but a glorified practice session. If I tune into a Busch Series race, it’s simply because there’s nothing else on to watch. So, I may watch a race here and there, but I won’t remain loyal to the series because I’m going to watch those same drivers on Sunday anyway. It also prevents drivers from being able to get themselves to that next level because the proper drivers aren’t receiving their due recognition in the amateur ranks.

It is already happening. You are going to see a decrease in new drivers capable of running competitively in the cup series because they aren’t able to log in the right amount of time needed at Busch level races. Because of that, you are seeing owners go out and recruit Indy drivers because they feel there is nothing available in the Busch.
