Poll Tally: Competitive Gaming Victorious
Well I’ll be…
I’m actually rather surprised about the outcome of the August poll. Apparently competitive gaming has made stronger inroads in the appeal department than I had expected. I thought the scoffing would be…scoff-ier, and the neutral votes a little higher, but as it turns out, it looks like Play-Girlz.com readers are supporters of the blossoming virtual sports.
A full 50% of respondents waved the comp. gaming banner high, saying that “It rocks, I love it! I hope it becomes more mainstream. ” With the number of sponsorship, television, and media deals flying around at the moment, I’d say that has a pretty good chance of happening, provided that glitz and glamour don’t fade to leave something reminiscent of watching your grandmother bake. The key will be to appeal to a broader viewing audience than the rabid omg-I-love-anything-gaming fans and market it as entertainment for the masses.
A reader, suggesting the option “I’d rather play than watch people play”, garnered some momentum and agreement from fellow voters, snatching 22% of the total vote. Perhaps comp. gaming isn’t quite the spectator sport that some people would have us believe. If you can’t entice someone to watch, you’re toast. That being said however, I feel the same way about most major league sports. I’d rather play baseball than watch it, I’d rather shoot hoops myself than yawn my way through a pro basketball game.
Fad! Fad, fad, fad! So said 14% of you. It looks like some of you think that competitive gaming will burn bright for a short time until people lose interest and it slinks back into the filthy bowels of the game industry from whence it came.
There weren’t too many fence sitters this month. Only 8% expressed a neutral attitude towards the booming phenomenon. More surprising still, only 6% of all voters gave competitive gaming two enthusiastic thumbs down.
