The comments I have read about the various Toshiba laptop PC's are very disturbing. I too have a Toshiba P205D that I purchased brand new a year and a half ago. About 6 months from purchase I began experiencing this "random blackout" with my monitor while in use. I initially thought I must have accessed a bad website, downloaded a corrupt program, or something similar. The computer was unresponsive to any key strokes. Therefore I had to do a cold shutdown just to restart the system. My system restarted and I did not notice any significant problems following this first blackout, so I wrote it off as a fluke. However, over the next few months my monitor’s random blackouts begin to increase. Each time this happen I would jot down what I was doing and sites I had open to see if I could pinpoint the issue. The only consistent activity I could note was that each time this occurred I was on the internet (didn’t matter which site), and had more than one browser opened at a time. I contacted Toshiba support, explained my problem, but the tech support was unable to provide me with a clear solution over the phone. They suggested I take my device into to a local tech support to have a diagnostic ran.

Disappointed with this suggestion because the onsite techs required I pay $75 just to run a scan, and an unknown final charge to repair despite my system was still under its first year factory warranty. In addition, they did not want to commit to too much repairs given the store (Circuit City) was going through financial problems at the time and had announced the closing of their stores in our area. I thought to myself, just my luck, I am about to be abandon and screwed over with my computer issues because the passing of the buck has just begun. Trying to weigh my options I began researching on-line to see if there were others customers experiencing similar issues and unfortunately there is a massive amount of aggravated consumers and according to the various blogs, consumers who are still waiting for a clear reply from Toshiba regarding resolving this issue. The same issues that appears to date back from complaints logged in 2007.

Given the mass complaints and lack of clarity from Toshiba about resolving this problem, it seems like a CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT is in order. I hate to go to these lengths, but it appears we are not given much choice in receiving the necessary help. We have all spent our hardworking dollars on what appears to be a defected product, yet no one is willing to stand up and accept responsibility. I just want a laptop that performs as advertised. There are too many complaints out here from customers to just blame it on poor handling from the store, shipping, or the bad PC that fell off the assembly line to say the manufacture has no responsibility. So let us continue to push for help as ONE LARGE VOICE.

I also have a 3 year old load of Tosh - Sat A100-049. It probably started blacking out mildly about 6 months ago, but is getting quite bad now. The screen quite often doesn't return from standby like it did well for the first couple years. Have to shutdown completely and restart to get life back into the screen. Interresting that during one of these blackout moments I plugged in an external monitor and with a few in and out of standby's the external monitor came on, but not the laptop one. Very frustrating, so about to get a Macbook...

I have had my computer for 3 years and it started doing it occaissionally and now it does it all the time. I can't run a whole program. I thought I would upgrade the operating system and it can't get through the upgrade. Now I am going to have to restore the hard drive onto an external one and wipe the system clean. I'll update if it works.

I also have a toshiba laptop which is about 3 years old now. The blank screen has happened a couple of times, but not often enough to be to concerned about. It boots up and i can make out the display however there is no backlight. I dont think I have upgraded the bios in a while, I will try that and see if that helps. Thanks for all the information!

My toshiba Satellite S4757 (which is a year old) started about a month doing this. I tried the update of the BIOS on the Toshiba website but it still does it. Tried changing the power options to never hibernate, sleep (as suggested by Toshiba Tech Support) and it still does it. Toshiba just told me to take it to Best Buy, but with everyone having this problem...I don't want to have to pay them to figure it out. Please help!!

Bob thanks for stopping by the site. Just show your parents these posts so they know it's not you causing these problems. There are a number of suggestions here for people to try, hopefully one of those will work for you. I'm still waiting to hear back from Toshiba to get official word.
