Post Graduation Job Interview

Graduation from High School and College is a big deal! Congratulations! Now that you have turned the tassle, what’s next? Now what?

My seventeen year old daughter graduated from high school a few weeks ago. She graduated with honors and she will be attending a private college in August – August 31st, but who’s counting? Her what’s next? Now what? - meant – Go get a job. There was no negotiation. I told her, she would get up every day, get a shower, get dressed and hit the streets until she found a job. The day after her graduation, she left the house at 9:00 in the morning and she came back at 3:30 in the afternoon with a job.

You may not have had that experience, especially if you just graduated from college. So let’s take a look for a moment at post graduation job interviews.

Why types of questions might the hiring manager ask you:

1. Why did you attend (name of your school)?
2. What was your major? Why did you select that major?
3. How has your education prepared you for working here in our organization?
4. Tell me about your GPA?
5. What would you do differently concerning your education or major, if you could do it again?
6. What extracurricular activities did you participate in while in college?
7. What classes did you enjoy the most? The least? And Why?

Keys to Remember As You Prepare For Your Interview:

1. Education is excellent, but it is not everything – Experience is better.
2. Tie your education, extracurricular activities and projects to the position or job opportunity
3. Be a believer – in YOU
4. Enthusiasm and passion will open doors
5. Prepare for your interview – research the company, the position
6. Match your skills to the position
7. Be teachable

Lastly, graduation by definition is not an ending as much as it is a beginning. Step into your new beginning. Go after the jobs you want, not the ones “they” say you can have. There is absolutely nothing impossible for you if you want it bad enough! Stay Hungry!

“If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” – Milton Berle

    Hi Darlene,

Great info. on your blog. Good news from the job market too.

Employers are planning to hire more new grads in 2007 than they did it 2005 – 2006, according to the Job Outlook 2007 Spring Update report, produced by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). NACE reports that business growth and expansion is one of the reasons for focused college hiring this year.

This is great news but New Grads will still need to deliver a winning job interview to beat the competition. We’ve got some great help for them with our FiredUP Interviewing – New Grad Edition audio CD. It has all the steps ’start to finish’ to help new grads deliver a top of the line interview.

Thanks again for your great blog – I’m sure it is well appreciated.
