Prediction: 2007 will find us getting more frustrated as tech support continues to disappoint one and all. All our gadgets will not save us from ourselves, from our tech support, from terrible manuals, from software which messes up hardware, from new-fangled operating systems which promise everything and deliver little or nothing or something we never knew we needed. Heaven help us all…

As example, here is the first winning entry in the It takes a computer to truly screw things up! Contest!:

Computer humor: taming your wireless with Norton Antivirus
nointernetconnection.jpg
2 little bugsOnce upon a time, before the hapless computer client family moved, they had their children’s laptop set up to be wireless. All worked well until they moved their household. Once moved, mom and dad couldn’t get the wireless to work. They bought a new router, checked the wireless card, called a friend to provide informal tech support – still no wireless and nothing worked. They brought in their ISP tech support to troubleshoot the cable connections. Still nothing worked. No matter what they did, they had no wireless. This went on for months! Finally, their Internet Service Provider (ISP) agreed to send a PC tech out to the house as a last resort. The tech “took one look at it and realized Norton AntiVirus was blocking all web access. The tech said the program thought that by not allowing us on the internet at all, we’d be safer from a virus!” With the flick of a button, the tech disabled it (Norton Antivirus), and wireless internet was restored… “Boy, did we feel dumb.”[THE END and family lived happily ever after, connected at last... ] I am sending a lovely artwork to the winning entry person and I also asked if the tech support had substituted any other form of antivirus protection. (maybe I shouldn’t have asked… ) This must be the same tech support who pour superglue into usb ports and call that ‘protecting company computers from outside interlopers.’

2 little bugsHave your own outrageous, true computer tale of horror, woe, or hilarity to tell?

IF published here, I’ll send you an original artwork, which can double as a mousepad (in a pinch), created by me. I’ve given these to friends, who have ALL framed them and said, “Mary, these are amazing! We love them!” Your anonymity is guaranteed, unless you want your name and link published along with the story. More details on this contest rules here and the stories in this week’s news which inspired the “It takes a computer to screw things up contest.”
