The start of official practice for college basketball is about a week and already there are a number of players from top schools that will miss some practices and could start the season on the bench due to injuries.
Reports have come out of North Carolina that senior swingman Marcus Ginyard had surgery to repair a stress fracture and is scheduled to miss eight weeks. Ginyard started every game for the Tar Heels last season leading them to the Final Four averaging 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds a game.
At UCLA, junior forward Nicola Dragovic complained to coach Ben Howland about pain in his left foot. According to the Los Angeles Times, an MRI showed a cyst and that will need further evaluation.
Also, Bruins freshman guard Jerime Anderson has been dealing with a deep groin pull for several months and it is not know when he’ll be ready to practice.
And here’s an injury that no one wants to have. According to the Associated Press, Santa Clara standout senior center John Bryant has been recovering from stab wounds to the back stemming from an off-campus incident two weeks ago.
Bryant started 30 of 31 games for the Broncos and led the West Coast Conference in rebounds with 9.6 and blocked shots with 2.3 last season. He was second in the conference in scoring averaging 18 points a game.
