Previously-unreleased Doom tunes get shared

John Romero, the long hair behind Doom, has shared over 30 unreleased Doom MIDI files in his blog. You can download them all, but the game icon gave us a caveat: The tunes aren’t very good. That’s the reason they didn’t come out with the retail version of Doom in the first place.

Romero proceeded to point out his standouts, but I’ll provide my own.

un17: Sounds like a rip-off of Slayer’s South of Heaven.

un30: This is a bit too different compared to Doom’s other tracks. Funky beat is like a breath of fresh air though.

un09: The synthetic double-bass drumbeats are pounding my ears to a bloody pulp, and that’s a good thing.

un19: I find this track good. I have no idea why it didn’t make the cut.

un20: Sounds like a Filipino classic rock song. Really. If you must know, this tune is similar to Beep Beep by the Juan Dela Cruz Band. If you’re wondering which came first, the Beep Beep single was released in 1977. I wonder if Romero considers Pinoy rock as an influence.

This collection of tunes is a must-have for Doom fans. Can’t say the same for rock enthusiasts since some of the tracks really suck.
