Primary Day – North Carolina and Indiana
In North Carolina, Barrack Obama hopes to capture a significant win over Hillary Clinton in his bid to win the Democratic Nomination, but voters will also be nominating their (party respective) choices for US Representatives, state representatives, and the open Governor and Lieutenant Governor positions.
The 8 candidates in the race for Governor come from a variety of backgrounds: 4 are State and Local officials (including: the current State Treasurer, Richard Moore (D); Lieutenant Governor, Beverly Perdue (D); a State Senator, Fred Smith (R); and the mayor of Charlotte, Pat McCrory(R)); 1 is a retired Air Force Colonel, Dennis Nielsen (D), who is also a rescue hero from the 1989 Sioux City air disaster; Bill Graham (R), is an attorney; 1 is a former state justice, Robert Orr (R); and, finally, Elbie Powers (R) is a farmer, a pecan farmer.
Indiana holds its Republican and Democratic Primaries today. Hillary Clinton maintains her lead over Senator Obama in the polls. Apart from the Presidential Elections, Indiana voters will also be selecting their candidates for Governor, Senator, US. Representatives and various state officials.
One interesting race is in the 7th Congressional District where 11 hopefuls (8 Democrat and 3 Republican) are vying for the nomination(s); the primary comes less than 60 days after the March 11th (yes, of this year) special election to fill the position left vacant following the passing of Representative, Julia Carson, in December. Carson’s grandson, Andre Carson, won the special election, making him the first Muslim to represent Indiana in Congress.
Check back tonight for a (hopefully) live blog of the election results!
