Pure Weight Loss Members to Receive $700,000 in Refunds

December 14, 2008 by Sean Kelly

PA Attorney General Tom Corbett has really come through for the former Pure Weight Loss (formerly LA Weight Loss) members.  In a recent press release,  Corbett’s office announced it has reached a consent decree that requires the Horsham, PA based company to pay $500,000 to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, for distribution to consumers who pre-paid for products and services that were not delivered, and another $200,000 to provide restitution to consumers who filed claims against Pure Weight Loss in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

Additionally, the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General is also working with authorities from the states of New York and Maryland to recover additional funds for consumers from the states.

Both New York and Maryland require weight loss centers to post security bonds intended to protect consumers against losses, and all complaints involving consumers from those states will be turned over to authorities in New York and Maryland as claims against those security bonds – allowing the remaining funds to be distributed to consumers from Pennsylvania and other states.

When the much-maligned Pure Weight Loss (formerly LA Weight Loss) chain abruptly closed its 400 locations nationwide in January, 2008, it left thousands of members owed hundreds of thousands in prepaid products and services.

    Dear Consumer:
The Public Protection Division – Health Care Section acknowledges receipt of your
complaint against Pure Weight Loss and would like to inform you that on January 23, 2008,
Attorney General Thomas W. Corbett, Jr. filed an action in the Commonwealth Court of
Pennsylvania against Pure Weight Loss, seeking redress for potential violations of
Pennsylvania’s Consumer Protection Law. The lawsuit seeks full restitution for all consumer
claims, along with civil penalties of up to $1,000 per violation – or $3,000 for violations
involving senior citizens. Be assured that we will periodically update you on the status of these
proceedings as new information is presented. Agent Supervisor Jeremiah Kling will serve as
    your contact with our office.
If you financed your purchase through a credit company, you may wish to contact
the credit card company and challenge the charge for services and/or products that have
    not been received.
Please note that you may have the right to bring a private legal action, however, you
may wish to contact an attorney as the Attorney General’s Office cannot provide you with
    individual, private legal representation.
On behalf of Attorney General Tom Corbett, thank you for bringing this matter to our
attention. We hope to be of assistance in resolving your complaint.
    Very truly yours,

    Timothy E. Gates

    Sean,
After I sent in all my information I really almost fell to the floor when i received this letter. At least they took my letter seriously, I hope. I also was shocked that they assigned me an Agent to serve as my contact. To me, it gave me a little bit of hope.

Thank you for your kind response. Wondering if anyone else received a letter like mine??

  3. Sean Kelly says:

That’s great. I applaud Corbett for being proactive on this. He got my vote last election.

Hopefully the next letter will have a check in it!
