Hmmmm… I suppose if you’re the writer and sold all rights scanning an article or copying it for posting might be a technical copyright violation… but I’ve done it for years and never had a problem… if you’re worried you could always either write the publication for permission, telling them exactly what you planned to do, or just list the title and the pub and the date and the fact that you wrote it (with a link if there is one.)

I’m a little confused–I would have thought that scanning or copying an article and posting it or mailing it would violate copyright. Or is there something (Fair Use, although that doesn’t seem correct to me?) that allows such use?

I’ve hesitated to post scans for this very purpose, but I’d love to hear that I’ve been incorrect in this assumption. Thanks!

yah, mac got it together with pdf… there are now good free converters for windoz too

On a Mac it is really easy (with free, included software) to print any Web article directly to a PDF–so you’ve got a copy with the web site masthead, even if the link breaks later. I’m not sure how to do it on a PC, but it’d be a real wise idea for anyone who writes a lot for the Web.

Allena, you’re right, pdf’s look great and are a cinch to do… the guide I really use is to remember what I wanted as an editor… and that was some sort of confirmation that this person I was considering assigning an article to could write… at least reasonably well.

Someone asked this exact same question on a listserv I’m on and we recommended PDFs but you’re right about hte size and etc. :( I just think they look so much more professional than word docs…sigh….

The thing is, as your post shows, there is not ONE FINAL ANSWER to this Q.
