Que Sera, Sera (In Your Business Life)

Life is scary.

My fifth-grader-about-to-turn-sixth-grader voiced those sentiments today as we took her to register for middle school. She was nervous, anxious and trembling as we got in the looooong line to register her. Seriously. She and about 10 of her friends were visibly nervous about starting 6th grade. They cited reasons for being nervous like forgetting their locker combinations, forgetting their locker locations, finding their classrooms, getting a top locker (mainly the girls want this one) and just being overwhelmed at the sheer size of a new school! I sympathize with them all as they embark on their new life journey.

Just as they’re all a little apprehensive about starting a new chapter in their life, so it is with us sometimes in our own lives. Starting anything new can be slightly overwhelming, even as adults. Remember when you got your first “real” job? What about when you got the promotion with the big corner office and a staff of 12? How overwhelming was that! But just as life is always changing and can be alarming at certain points, we must learn to condition ourselves and roll with the punches.

Press On
I have found that the hardest thing that I have to contend with in times of change is uncertainty and making wise choices. Whenever there is going to be inevitable change, I concern myself with the outcome and hope that I make the best decision so that I CAN enjoy the right outcome. I want to be sure, although I can’t always be, that the choices that I make are what’s best for me in the long run. But, who can know? I can’t know and neither can you or anyone else. All we can do is hope for the best and look forward to great things happening, just as I tell my soon-to-be 6th grader.

It Will Be
Whatever will be, will be and we have no way of changing that, right? Or is that right? Is there any way any of us can change the outcome of things?

What about you? Do you face any concerns in your business life that keep you angsting and worrying? Do you concern yourself at all or just throw caution to the wind and say Que Sera, Sera, whatever will be, will be?

Or should we all just be like the tweenified 6th graders and keep our fingers crossed for the top locker?! Oh, if life were only THAT simple!

bridget im so glad you wrote about this because last nite i had a freak out about what im doing with my life and trying to pay all my bills and my tidal wave of college debt. i want to do what i want with my life, but im so chained down. it’s a very frustrating time and can feel very hopeless.

  2. Nicole, simply just take everything one day at a time, case by case, and remember that nothing will fall apart. Life will still be going on tommorrow. Just relax and focus on the task(s) at hand.
