Effective entrepreneurs and executives need to be decisive. However, smart managers also need to be able to examine their options with an open mind.

That’s why it’s important to identify the assumptions you make, and consider the consequences if your assumptions are wrong.

Someone needs to play the devil’s advocate, without being labelled as having a bad attitude. In those moments of sober second thought there are opportunities to see another way of accomplishing your goals.

In the end, the obvious course of action is often the right one. But if you are so sure it’s the right thing to do, there should be no reason to worry that the idea won’t stand up to scrutiny.
