Rants of the Day
Hey there everyone! I’m back for the second installment of my daily rants. I’ll be following up on Verizon’s brilliant idea of including ads in their mobile phones, as well as a “Make Marketing History’s” 2007 New Marketing Resolutions; we can all learn from them and keep up with them.

Allen Weiss at Marketing Prof’s daily fix writes on both sides of the Verizon ads issue. I think he is right on target when he says that many marketers are bluntly salivating at this opportunity. While I agree many are, I don’t really understand the reason for it.
Haven’t we learned something this year? Haven’t we seen countless examples of intrusive advertising being thrown out the window? Are many marketers out there willing to expose their brands by annoying users in one of the remaining ad-free services out there?
Mobile phone usage is increasing by the minute (as well as profits for the companies); IMO this isn’t the best way for the mobile phone companies to increase profits (through another medium) or even for marketers to advertise their brands. Users will end up very fed up of the mobile phone service and the brands that are marketing through it. Verizon might as well have started the ‘end of mobile internet usage’.

On another corner of the web @ Make Marketing History, John Dodds just published what he thinks should be 2007’s New Marketing Resolutions. I’m copying the whole thing because I think it is great.
2) You will eschew mantras and mission statements.
3) You will not say or think we always do it this way.
4) You will question everything.
5) You will not utter the phrase “sales & marketing.”
6) You will survey with your eyes and ears and not with questionnaires.
7) You will not speak of demographics, psychographics or flash graphics.
8) You will appreciate that a Google search does not automatically imply a desire to purchase.
9) You will not over-promise, but you will over-deliver.
10) You will accept that all advertising is interruptive.
11) You will not deny the negative impacts of your business.
12) You will market in a style predicated on honest information and conversation enhancement rather than selling and hype.
