In A Surprise Twist, Fellow Employees Don’t Hatch Wacky Scheme to Get Him His Job Back…

To hear Eddie Doyle explain it, sometimes you want to go where everybody doesn’t know you’re laid off.

The man who tended bar for 35 years at the Boston tavern that inspired the long-running sitcom Cheers, was laid off this month in yet one more sign of the seriousness of the current recession.

A sharp-tongued waitress who gave her name only as “Carla” said, “He should’ve seen it coming after the TV show was canceled back in 1993.”

At age 66, Doyle isn’t sure what he’ll do next but he spent his last remaining days at the bar chatting amiably with customers and looking for Shelley Long’s phone number.
