Lee LeFever has provided a very neat explanation of RSS, with pictures, in his Video: RSS in Plain English.
Elegant and entertaining.
He gives some examples of readers. I would be adding BlogBridge.
This video link is one to send to your friend or family member who could benefit from RSS, especially if his or her eyes glazed over last time you tried to explain it.
