Rebranding for MSN?

Microsoft may be rebranding the known MSN entity to something like, MSN Media Network. Is this really necessary? I think it’s a given that any web portal or business offering active on the web today is becoming more of a media distribution point.

Since this rebranding isn’t part of expanding or improving Microsoft’s image to other countries, I don’t think the money being invested for this is coming out of the $120M. Not that it really matters how much it costs, but I don’t believe the investment of time, energy or other resources is worth this.

I believe Microsoft can still capitalize on the simple MSN name and image they’ve already built. If they’d invest in it becoming truly a media network by adding and improving content, then they’ll build a name for themselves in this arena without having to rename themselves. My opinion is if you have to tell somebody you’re something for them to know it, it may not be true. BOCTAOE.

Microsoft has always been as much about marketing as it is about substance. In this particular arena they know they can’t have the best content. They’re too late to the game. So they compensate with marketing.
