Steve – Glad you enjoyed the article. I thought it was very thought-provoking, and definitely agree with your assessment that someone who goes the extra mile outside of work is also more likely to do so inside of work. I know that’s true of me.

Ron – You’re right, recession is a big topic these days. Very timely, and very nicely done article! Thanks for writing it!

Anita – No dumping doormats here, just solution finder! That’s what we all get paid to do, right? Find solutions, not point at problems. Thanks for sharing!

I think this goes along with your #7 of becoming an expert in your field….You can become the “troubleshooter.” If you’re the “go-to” person when things start to go off the tracks, you’ll always be very valuable. You don’t want to be a doormat, of course, dumped with all the bad stuff, but being able to step in and keep it all from going down the dumper will not only endear you to everyone, but help develop your reputation as a key player.

Phil,

Thanks for the trackback and the mention in your article. I’ve noticed that most of my traffic the past few days has been to the article “Six Steps…to a Recession-proof Career”. Many readers came directly from Slacker Manager but many, many came from Google searching.

There seems to be a lot of worry in the market now. As a heads up, I’m working on a few more articles to address this topic. It seems timely and I want to help calm fears and craft strategies to successfully navigate wherever the economy takes us.

Thanks for the reference to Ron’s post as well as your own suggestion about being known as an “expert”.

If someone is working voluntarily on behalf of a professional organization, chances are (s)he may also be the cheerleader who already goes the extra mile at work.

Given the uncertainty out there right now, this info is all good.
