Reggie Kelly Suffers Ruptured Achilles

Reggie Kelly’s 2009 NFL season is over before it even began. The tight end for the Cincinnati Bengals suffered a ruptured achilles on Monday. His surgery is set for Wednesday and won’t be back on the field until the 2010 season.

The 32-year-old tight end has played in the NFL for 11 seasons. He’s been with the Bengals since the 2003 season after starting his career with the Atlanta Falcons. Last year, Kelly tied a career-high with 31 receptions. For his career, he has 184 catches for 1718 yards and five touchdowns.

With Kelly out of the picture, the Bengals will likely rely more on Ben Utecht. Utecht was signed away from the Indianapolis Colts last season but struggled with injuries. He had only 16 catches for 123 yards in 10 games in his first year with the Bengals.

If Utecht doesn’t play well in training camp, the Bengals could look for a veteran free agent tight end or may investigate trade options.
