Retire Now (Again)

I started to co-write Slacker Manager with Phil Gerbyshak in July 2007. I have written 3 post a week every week for a year. During the next month I will highlight a few of my favorite posts. Here is the first post I wrote for Slacker Manager.

In about 10 years the number of young people getting into the workplace will no longer be enough to replace retirees.

Tim Cork, a career coach, stated in The Globe and Mail, “if you are fifty-something and you can expect to live into your 80s, you should be thinking of this as half-time and not the beginning of the end.”

He encourages older workers to think about a new career with these tips:

  1. focus on your strengths
  2. find your passion
  3. network
  4. create your brand
  5. do your homework
  6. take action
  7. don’t be discouraged
  8. have a support system

I don’t know about you but this would be the same advice I have heard for recent graduates from high school or university.

If you are younger you may be expected to work longer in your life.

Don’t wait for retirement, retire now.

Retire now…

Retire now  does not mean you stop working. It means you work at what interests you and what you care about.

Retire now  means that you take vacations, breaks, and time with your family.

Retire now  means you stop always trying to climb up the career ladder and enjoy being on the rung.

Retire now  means you “stop trying harder and try softer.”

Retire now  means you don’t always have to be connected or respond to each email within 22 seconds.

Retire now  means that you make contributions to society and you fully develop yourself.

Retire now  means you can take full satisfaction in what you have done in your life, even at 22 years of age!

Retire now  means you learn from the past, look forward to the future, but live in the ever changing current now.

Retire now  means that retirement is a part of working not apart from working.

Don’t wait for some magic age such as 50, 60 or 65. Don’t wait for some “retirement package.” Retire now.

Your have a great post! Older workers should think of retiring and explore new ideas to work with. Nothing can compare to the pleasure of spending quality time with the family. You can have your career right at your own home by engaging in the net biz. If anyone’s interested in starting an online business, try Woody Maxim’s Online Home Study Course. The program will give you brilliant ideas to start a new career at home.

Ah to retire while working and working while retired is to really blur the lines between work and play and make for a healthy approach to living.

I thought of myself as a “The time is now” person. This really inspired me. I changed my life style straight away from putting up with frustration in the work place to doing something – even if I am only a supervisor. I am definitly going to study again, possibly change my job, possibly immigrate. The list is amazing. Thank you.

I am so glad you found this as amazing. I am 53 and have been retired for a very long time and will continue to be retired for a very long time yet you would not believe all the work I am doing.

What have you done to your website? I had to Google to get to this blog. This blog shoud have a “Golden Blog” award. I have been sharing it with all my friends and family with positive results all round. It should be posted at least once a year on “The Anniversary of the Golden Blog”.
When I read BNet fake sick leave blogs I was amazed at the level of frustration and anger. I thought of referring them to “Retire Now” but could not trace it on your Web site.

    Corinne:
B5 media controls the look and structure of the blog while Phil and I contribute the content. I am quite fond of my retire now post as it is a way I have lived more than just a post I wrote.
