Rex Grossman and the Bears go for the implosion

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Vikings player helps Rex with foot placement on deep throws

Rex GrossmanGeez, the Bears were that close to winning it all. That close!

So what the heck are they doing in the off season? Do they purposely want to fail?

You know you had a team built on extra strength defense, right? Well, you would not know it.

They got rid of their defensive coordinator.

Ronald Eugene Rivera (born January 7, 1962 in Fort Ord, California) is the first American of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent to play in the National Football League (NFL). He was a member of the 1985 Chicago Bears, who won Super Bowl XX. Rivera was the defensive coordinator for the 2006 Chicago Bears, who won the National Football Conference championship. He is currently the linebackers coach for the San Diego Chargers. source

Tank Johnson gets incarcerated. As we read in the Taipei Times. (What, you are not reading the Taipei Times? Get with it.)…

Tank Johnson of the Chicago Bears was suspended by the NFL for the first eight games of the US football season later this year for violating the league’s new personal conduct policy.

The defensive tackle served two months in jail for violating his probation on gun-related charges.

Johnson did not go hungry while in jail. Jailhouse records show he spent US$700 on junk food, including 35 bags of barbecue chips, 40 honey bun sweet rolls and 162 beef sticks. source

At one point after the Super Bowl, it looked like the Bears would not resign Lovie Smith as head coach. His contract extension was stalled and the process appeared to be going nowhere.

The process wasn’t easy.

Smith and team president Phillips met Wednesday at Halas Hall and the deal was announced that night. It was a sharp turnaround, considering Smith’s agent Frank Bauer said a week earlier the talks had stalled and that his client would likely leave when his contract expired after the 2007 season. And the negotiations did little to boost the image of a franchise that is perceived to be stingy. source

The Bears made All Pro Linebacker Lance Briggs one angry Bear by tagging him the franchise player and thus denying him a long term contract. Lance has threatened to sit out the first 10 games of the season. Lovie had this to say:

“History tells me that players don’t miss an entire football season. Lance is a part of us. We would like to have him here. Hopefully in time we’ll get him back.” source

The Bears traded star running back Thomas Jones.

Filling their need for a No. 1 ball carrier, the Jets agreed to a trade with the NFC champion Chicago Bears that landed them Thomas Jones and the 63rd overall pick in the upcoming draft in exchange for the 37th overall pick. New York acquired that in a draft-day deal with Washington last year. source

The Bears are going to run with often injured Cedric Benson.

And then there is Rex Grossman’s quarterbacking. It is still there or not there, depending on how you look at it.

NFL Football Fan Question Can the Bears survive the off season?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.

  1. Mark Evans says:

The Bears will never win with Grossman as QB. He’s Trent Dilfer – average quarterback on a team with a great defense.
