Rivers makes the most of it, as Big Ben struggles

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Philip Rivers can throw!

Philip Rivers Phillip Rivers was big question mark coming into the season. San Diego was going to have to live with Rivers, because Drew Brees took a hike to New Orleans. The Chargers were reluctant to ante up in the Drew Brees Sweepstakes because Drew was injured and Rivers was waiting. Patiently, he waited.

Now it is River’s team and make no doubt about it, he can get the job done. San Diego took down Pittsburgh 23-13 behind the play of Rivers.

One game does not make a season, but it can be a microcosm of what is to come for the Chargers. Phillip Rivers making great plays with his feet, head, and throwing arm was just the beginning. In the second half, LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael Turner were in the backfield at the same time. With Tomlinson spread out to the slot, it confused the defense of Pittsburgh. This is the ‘Super Bowl good enough’ defense of Pittsburgh, scratching their heads.

So we have Rivers coming on as a quarterback, we have the two halfback set on offense, hmm, something else is needed. That’s right, it came to me, San Diego has one big bad Defense. They held Pittsburgh down all night. Roethlisberger had only 220 yards passing and the Steelers only had 68 yards rushing. Those are not game winning stats.

NFL Football Fan Question Big Ben is going through a rough stretch, while Phillip Rivers is gaining confidence. With San Diego’s great D and a pretty easy schedule, could they be the surprise team of the West Division?

  1. Geoff Young says:

I really liked what Brees did when he was here, but I’ve been impressed by Rivers so far. He is making good decisions and doesn’t look like a guy without much pro experience. Very poised, very confident.

  2. James says:

Geoff, got to see Brees when the Boilermakers came into East Lansing to play my MSU Spartys. He was accurate and elusive.

So, tell me, how strong and accurate is Rivers?

and what about Tomlinson sharing the backfield? Is that going to work?
