Rumor Mill: Xbox Live Arcade Cutting Down on Indie Developers?

News from over at Destructoid has alerted us to the rumor that Microsoft might be considering cutting down on the number of independent developers it allows onto Xbox Arcade Live. The rumor suggests that big name publishers are putting pressure on (also see: whining to) Microsoft about there being too much competition. Microsoft is also concerned about the sheer volume of titles “cluttering” Xbox Live.

Of course this “clutter” would only apply to indie developers.

If this rumor proves true, Microsoft will likely have a lot of angry gamers on their hands. Indie developers are responsible for a great number of wonderful titles on XBLA, and some might argue, “the best” games there. So for Microsoft to bow down to bigger publishers is pretty lame and upsetting all around. Not to mention depressing, when you consider what this might mean for the future of gaming in general.

But in the meantime, we’ll file this purely under “rumor” and hope that Microsoft is listening to the cries of outrage at the mere suggestion that this might be true.
