Russia has officially filed a case against Microsoft and as such Russian antitrust regulators are investigating on the unfair practice of Microsoft where they have halted the sale of Windows XP despite the large demand to force consumers to upgrade or buy Windows Vista.
The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) said Microsoft has abused their dominant position in the operating system market by halting the Windows XP sales from retail in June 2008. They contend that the demand for Windows XP remains high and see no reason for pushing the latest operating system and removing the widely used XP.
According to FAS statement — "Analysis of various operating systems show that the transition to the new operating system Windows Vista comes with the continued demand for the previous operating system, Windows XP. Demand of Windows XP is also confirmed by retailers and the number of orders in the field of public procurement. The case against Microsoft Corp. will be considered July 24, 2009".
Microsoft is not new to antitrust cases and their lawyers have the experience to drag this case and come up with agreements that would still continue their revenue generating products being sold in the market.
