Dinara Safina was knocked out of the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament on Wednesday (March 18) by Victoria Azarenka of Belaru.  She beat her in three sets, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-3, during the quarterfinals match.

Azarenka has played against Safina three times before, but has never been able to defeat her, until yesterday. When the match started Safina looked strong, but lost her momentum in the second set and was never able to make a comeback. What was Safina’s explanation for losing this match? A complete lack of agression.

“The other times I’ve been aggressive and I never let her into the match,” Safina said.

Azarenka is set to play Beijing Olympic Bronze Medalist Vera Zvonareva in the semifinals. Zvonareva also just so happens to be Safina’s doubles partner (isn’t tennis funny that way?) and they will play against Flavia Pennetta and Maria Kirilenko on Thursday (March 19).
