Scrapbook online, on Facebook, with Scrapbook Your Memories Facebook app

I saw on meshEast today a link to a review of a new Facebook app developed in beautiful New Brunswick (yes, I’ve been there, several times) that lets you make a scrapbook for a friend based on their Facebook album and give it to them, virtually and physically:

There is a lot of buzz going around New Brunswick today about a new Facebook Scrapbook Application that is apparently going into beta this week. While it’s important to note that this does not appear to be an official Facebook Scrapbook application, it’s noteworthy because, well, it’s on the Facebook platform, but also it was created by two entrepreneurs here in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Here’s an example of how it will work: you’re notified of your friends birthday. You want to buy them a gift. Well you can now do that in Facebook. Within 10 mins. you can create a digital and handmade scrapbook from their facebook photo albums. All you have to do is pick your friends albums you want to use to produce the scrapbook, pick an album and start creating. It is so easy to do and such a great gift idea. Once you have created the scrapbook, you will have the digital copy in your profile and you can then order the handmade copy through Facebook and Paypal. This is what is great about tech nowadays, people with a great niche can now expand online and come up with something really, really creative–and they don’t have to be in one of the "tech centres" to do it!

You all know that I’m no fan of Facebook.  Too many pointless apps that just, well, don’t help live up to the potential Facebook has.  This app, even without installing it, is different.  This is something useful. It’s something that I could do, if I were so inclined, and even give the scrapbook to someone as a physical item.  This solves a problem for people.  It gives kids who are much more comfortable with computers a way to make a scrapbook for friends, not to mention craft-challenged folks like me.

If Facebook is going to survive and grow in 2008, more apps like this have to be developed.  Who’s ready to step up to the plate?
