Serena Williams is on a hot streak. First she won at Wimbledon (in both the single and the doubles) and now she’s advanced to the quarterfinals of the $700,000USD WTA Premier Bank of the West Classic.
Top-seeded Williams eliminated Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-3, 7-6 (7) and she had some nice things to say about the ousted player who fought hard in the nearly two-hour match. “She served well, toward the end especially,” Williams said. “I could have returned better but it was still good practice. It only affected four or five games but those games could be crucial. I made some key errors so it was good I ended up winning.”
Williams will go on to battle Australian, Samantha Stosur today. “It should be a good match,” Williams said. “She’s improved tons; leaps and bounds. I’ve been a little bit off this whole week. I hope I can get back on.”
Some other notable names have reached the quarters including Serena’s older sister, Venus Williams who will face Maria Sharapova in a match tonight. “I’m excited. I love playing against her and it’s been a while,” Sharapova said. “It’s great to come back and have the chance to play against a great player like Venus, who is at the top of her game right now.”
The feeling appears to be mutual with Venus saying: “My key is to execute my game as best I can. There’s no secret to that. I feel like it will be a good matchup for me. I always enjoy playing against Maria.”
I’m looking forward to the results from today’s match-ups!
