Set up your hard disk for BitLocker Drive Encryption

January 17, 2008 by Milo Riano

I tried enabling the BitLocker Drive Encryption; unfortunately I haven’t setup my PC for its requirements right from the get go. If you would like to use BitLocker Drive Encryption, the following are the things you need to keep in mind:

1. At least two partitions (also called volumes): One partition is for the operating system drive (typically drive C) that BitLocker will encrypt, and one is for the active partition, which must remain unencrypted to start the computer. The size of the active partition must be at least 1.5 gigabytes (GB).

2. Both partitions must be formatted with the NTFS file system.
