Seven Things I Wish I Would have Known…

Whether you’re an astronaut or a banker or a farmer or anything in between, once you have a few years of experience under your belt, you cringe at the mistakes you made when you first entered the industry. Freelance writing is no different. Here are seven things I wish I would have know when I was a beginner:

  1. You don’t have to work for $3 per article – higher rates aren’t just possible; they’re the norm.
  2. Not every client is going to like your writing style, and some are mean or condescending about it.
  3. Get a deposit before you start or use an Escrow service.
  4. Read every contract very carefully.
  5. It takes more than a good idea to make a successful blog.
  6. As a freelancer, you’ll spend as much time applying for jobs as you will writing.
  7. Separate your personal accounts (email, social networking, etc) from your business accounts.

I could probably go on, but those are probably the seven best pieces of advice that I could share with another person starting out in the freelancer world. At least, they’re the things I wish someone would have told me!

What do you wish someone would have told you when you started freelance writing?
