Shanda, the online company that partners TECMO in producing Dead or Alive Online, has acquired Chengdu Aurora Technology Development Co. Ltd or Aurora Technology in short. Aurora Technology is one of the leaders in developing and operating MMORPG such as Legend Online (传说Online) and Feng Yun Online (风云Online) which has 6 million registered users.
The founder (and a college dropout) of Aurora Technology, Mr Peng Hai Tao (彭海涛), used his father’s 1 million yuan ($131 000) to start the company in 2004. Three years later, Shanda acquired Aurora Technology with 1 billion yuan ($13 million), making Mr Peng a billionaire.
Mr Peng, an avid gamer himself, said he chose Shanda solely on personal preference. To me, it’s quite a smart choice.
We can see that Shanda is increasing its profile and profits by making strategic moves such as marketing Dead or Alive Online and acquiring local game companies. Obviously, Shanda is the next game company to take notice.
