Sharapova Hoists the Trophy

January 26, 2008 by Erica

I knew Maria Sharapova was going to win the Australian Open after she beat Justine Henin in the quarters. Not that there is any great super power in that. I’m sure many tennis fans worldwide were cognizant of the same thing.

But watching Sharapova take a straight-set 7-5, 6-3 victory over Ana Ivanovic in the Australian Open final was…well…I ended up switching channels and following along half-heartedly online.

So Ivanovic hit 33 unforced errors compared to Sharapova’s 15 and Sharapova won 89 percent of her first serve points compared to Ivanovic’s 62. Sharapova was definitely better than Ivanovic in the final. Heck, she was better than everyone in her path and it wasn’t an easy path. She just made it look that way.

Congrats Sharapova.

Agreed on two counts: #1, I knew Sharapova would win after she beat Justine; #2, I was equally unenthused.

I used to like Maria until I read in Tennis Magazine how snotty/indifferent she is to her fans.

I know. I’ve tried to like her and enjoy her game but the best I can do is have an indifferent respect for her talent. I like to think people are people and just because you’re six feet, blonde and a tennis star doesn’t mean you’re really anything all that special :)
