Shopflick.com is an online marketplace that doesn’t just post pictures and descriptions of products, they also allow sellers to incorporate video to enhance the shopping experience. Additionally, the website utilizes several social and interactive components.
Like eBay or Etsy, Shopflick doesn’t hold their own inventory. They match buyers with sellers, collecting transaction fees. Shopflick charges a 12.5% fee on items sold (that’s pretty steep!). They may begin to charge a $9.95/month fee for opening a store, but currently, there’s no fee with store registration or listings. The company is led by CEO David Grant who was President at FOX TV Studios.
The site features products from some established brands, as well as up-and-coming independent designers. The designers are encouraged to create and upload videos into their “boutiques.” This allows new designers to instantly create a branded online store. The designers can also use the Shopflick video commerce widgets to spread the word about their products all over the internet.
Shoppers can click-to-buy directly from the video listings, as well as comment on, collect, share and “favorite” products. Users can even create their own videos.
If you are a seller and lacking tech skills, you can check out the Shopflick Filmmaker Marketplace (SFM) to find a “qualified, pre-approved” videographer and filmmakers in your area. These professionals will shoot and edit video footage at an affordable price (as little as $250).
The site is primarily geared toward women’s apparel, shoes and accessories. However, they also sell beauty products, as well as men’s and children’s apparel.
Shopflick raised $7M in funding back in July 2008 as they emerged out of beta, so obviously investors believe in the model. Whether it will be successful or not, only time will tell. However, the site is done well, allowing users to discover and buy from designers and labels that they may not normally know.
