Should Microsoft Leave Vista in the Dust?

Microsoft has some very important decisions to make in the coming months on their Windows strategy. They are bound to release Windows 7 in October and pushing this operating system much earlier is the slow adoption of Windows Vista and the continous usage of Windows XP.

However; a lot of factors have contributed to this state which includes the economic crisis, massive bugs in Vista in the early months, the negative publicity that could not be overturned, the rise of netbooks in the market. In short, I think Microsoft Windows Vista release was just bad timing and things could have been better if they actually launched that operating system today.

Recent reports show that Windows Vista adoption has finally overtaken Windows XP as the Vista’s market share cracked the 20% while Windows XP fell by 1.81 percent. This might show that Vista adoption and perception is changing and that we can see increase implementation of the operating system.

Should Microsoft leave Vista in the dust? It would be a difficult and tricky move for Microsoft to keep both Windows 7 and Windows Vista marketable. Obviously, Windows 7 is a far better and improved operating system than Vista and marketing both of them doesn’t make sense. If the price is almost the same, why would users have Vista installed when in fact it is more expensive given the hardware requirements compared to Windows 7. What if Microsoft Windows 7 doesn’t pick up steam and users continue upgrading to Windows Vista instead?

These items are on Microsoft’s plate and they should be certain on what strategy they are sticking with. I would rather risk the sale of more Windows Vista machines and rely everything on Windows 7 than confusing the public on what OS to buy.

What do you think? Should Microsoft sell Windows 7 or both?

They should continue to support it, but don’t leave it in the dust. Vista was a great operating system and was a stepping stone for Win 7… an even greater OS.
