Silent Hill II — Gaiman Co-Scribing?
I just saw the first Silent Hill only a few months ago and thought it was, in a word that requires no explanation, tripe. No point even mentioning the mutilated plot. Not particularly scary (the game scares the stink out of me), not particularly engaging (it took me three watches to get through it, I kept falling asleep) and, dare I say it, just another video game movie that failed to hit the mark.
I’m not very surprised that they’re following it up with second go despite my misgivings; the project budget for the first film was a cool $50 million, and worldwide the first movie not only recouped the investment of its backers, but raked in over $97.5 million. Money talks, sequels fly.
There is a small glimmer of hope that something intriguing could come out of this mind you, as rumour has it that Mirrormask author Neil Gaiman might be lending the scriptwriters a hand, or so said director Christophe Gans.
Mr. Gaiman apparently was unaware of his contribution, and seemed puzzled in a post on his online journal, saying:
Yesterday [Dec. 27th] I discovered pretty much all of my FAQ messages were people asking whether I was really going to be writing the Silent Hill sequel with Roger Avary. I’m afraid that I don’t think I am–I mean, it’s the first thing I’ve ever heard of it…
Gans, who is officially commenting on the project as though he were involved, is not even 100% sure that he will be in the director’s chair, due to time constraints from YAVMA (yet-another-videogame-movie-adaptation), this time for Onimusha.
Who wants to bet they bring in Uwe Boll to replace Gans if he should have to bow out?
