Slacker Manager Values

November 25, 2008 by Phil Gerbyshak

I’ve been here almost 18 months, writing management articles and sharing my favorite finds on the web where you can get your management fix. In an effort to focus in on what is REALLY important for managers and managers-in-training, I’m going to begin writing a series on the values Slacker Managers have or can work to acquire to get more done with the people you work with.

I’ll try to keep this series full of short, quick hitting articles that can get you thinking and get put into action quickly. Here are a few of the values I’ll be writing about.

  • Authenticity
  • Collaboration
  • Lifelong Learning
  • Failure
  • Communication
  • Succession planning

If you have a value you believe all Slacker Managers should have, please leave a note in the comments, or send me a note at phil.gerbyshak@b5media.com I will be happy to share the best of the best included, and my goal is create a resource that everyone can learn from and refer to for years to come.

  1. Alan says:

    Phil,

Make sure you add Evaluation and Goal-Setting, Disciplinary Skills, Development, and Encouragement.

In my experience, these skills have always been pushed down the priority list for Managers or soon-to-be-Managers, but have been at the top of the list as complaints or criticisms from employees for a good long time.

And lastly, for those of us in a Middle Management position who take on the stresses and craziness from our Director-Level or C-Suite bosses, how to deal with them while at the same time keeping your sanity and maintaining your own department and goals.

  2. Marianne says:

Respect for our strengths, compassion for our weaknesses.
