It’s better than Miss USA and far less controversial. I mean the “Small Business of the Year” award that is presented to a small business each year by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as a “Community Excellence Award.” According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the award “is designed to highlight the integral role that small businesses play in their communities.”

The winner was chosen from seven regional finalists and was announced as part of the 2009 America’s Small Business Summit on Tuesday, May 12.The winner, AGM Container Controls, began in 1964 when Roger Stewart started Arizona Gear Manufacturing to market a new product called breather valves, which prevents excessive pressure of vacuum buildup in sealed containers. A few acquisitions and name changes later, AGM Container Controls has a varied product line ranging from national defense equipment to wheelchair lifts for public facilities. For more information about the company and specific services provided, please visit their Web site at: www.agmcontainer.com/.
The award honors the Tucson-based manufacturer for being a leader in the community, demonstrating intelligent business judgment, and showing a true commitment to its employees and customers.
“There is no secret to AGM Container Controls’ success,” said Thomas J. Donohue, U.S. Chamber president and CEO. “They continue to provide quality products and first class service. AGM encompasses the attributes that any company needs to succeed in a tough economy—business judgment, customer service, and a commitment to their employees.”
America’s Small Business of the Year Award, sponsored by Sam’s Club®, pays tribute to companies showcasing exemplary staff training and motivation, community involvement, customer service, and business and financial planning.
