Snacks for Writers

Let’s take a break from talking about business today and instead talk about something fun – snacks! I don’t know about you guys, but this week’s been super busy, and I could sure use the break.
Working at home isn’t good for the waistline, if you’re anything like me. I guess the same is true with any office job where you’re sitting most of the day, but when you’re at home and your kitchen is RIGHT THERE…
To help battle the bulge, I’d started stocking my cupboards with healthier snacks. That way, when I do chow down, at least I’m making better choices. Here are my top five favorite healthy snacks. And remember, healthy is relative – at least I’m not eating candy and drinking soda anymore!
1. Popcorn: My favorite popcorn snack is the mini bags you can get from multiple companies. Then, I get Kernel Season’s Popcorn Seasoning in a bunch of flavors so that I can have a variety of kinds. My favorite so far is Parmesan and Garlic. Yum. (Picture via kernelseasons.com)
2. Rachel’s Yogurt: Our grocery store JUST started carrying this company’s products and I LOVE them. The yogurt is creamy, without chunks of fruit (I HATE fruit chunks in my yogurt), and the flavors are really unusual. They all have a purpose – calming, vitality, reviving, etc. I’m not a fan of the Plum Honey Lavender, but I like all the other ones. My favorite so far is pomegranate açai. 3. Celery with Peanut Butter: Yum. I buy peanut butter that is organic, natural, and low-fat, so it’s a little punch of protein during the day without TONS of fat. (Picture via www.smuckers.com)
4. Pirate’s Booty: Several months ago, Pirate Booty got a bad rap because their Veggie Booty was recalled. The problem’s cleared up, but my grocery store still doesn’t carry it. All of the Pirate Booty products are good, though – and good for you, as long as you don’t eat half the bag in one sitting. (Picture via robscape.com)
I’m not saying I know anything about that…
5. 100 Calorie Packs: I was slow to jump on this train – they just didn’t look good. I’ve tried a few kinds of Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs now, though, and I have to say, some of them are pretty good. I love the oreo kind and the chocolate covered pretzels. 100 calories isn’t so bad! (Picture via nabiscoworld.com)
None of these companies are paying me or anything – they’re legitimately my favorite afternoon snacks. Leave a comment – what are your favorites?

Thanks for disclosing that they’re not (yet) paying you. ;-)
Generally, when freelancing, isn’t the point to keep costs low? Pre-packaged, commercial products — in disposable, Earth-Day-ignoring packaging, no less — cannot replace good ‘ol fashioned veggies and fruits for health or cost. Munch on an apple, chop up some carrots, or pop a cherry tomato or two in your mouth and you’ll enjoy some of the most nutrient-rich, cost-efficient and no-muss-no-fuss offerings out there. Save your wallet and your waistline!
I also recommend gardening. Planting in containers in a light-filled room or in some outdoor garden space helps to clear the mind and move the body. I planted tomatoes on my balcony last year. I would bet I consumed fewer unhealthy additives with those than with your yogurt.
And speaking of yogurt, I recommend googling Sarah Haskins on Target: Women. “Yogurt is the official food of women.” ;-)
You’re absolutely right about the importance of keeping healthy snacks around for freelancers. My favorite is yogurt with milled flaxseed added to it. Depending on the yogurt, it even works as a light breakfast.
That popcorn seasoning is practically a food group for me!
Just yesterday, I wrote a post bemoaning my need to snack while I write. And today you post this–with info about a popcorn seasoning that sounds amazing?
Seriously, though, tips for healthy snacks are always appreciated. Thanks!
Fruit smoothies! 1/2 cup each of milk and OJ, 1 banana, and 1/2 c of frozen berries in the blender. Healthy but tasty. Heft one. It’ll fill you up.
Oh, I totally agree! If you can have a garden, def do it (I rent and really can’t for the most part). I’m really, really picky about the fruits and veggies I’ll buy, since I grew up getting them fresh from the garden, and wish I could have my own garden, though I’ll be the first to admit that my thumb is BLACK. Actually, my all-time favorite snack? Canned pears, grown in my grandma’s garden and canned by my mother. I didn’t think it was fair to put that on my list, since ya’ll can’t buy that at a store. :)
That’s so funny – great minds think alike I guess! Actually, this is the third time this week someone’s said “I just posted about the same/a similar topic, which is crazy because I write my posts in advance and set them to auto-publish for the most part. It’s cool that all of us at-home-ers are dealing with many of the same issues. Makes the world seem a little smaller.
