SOLVING THE WORLD’S PROBLEMS 3: The Millennium Campaign Report Card

189 Countries in a 2000 United Nations Millennium Summit signed the Millennium Declaration setting forth 8 Millennium Development Goals.

Millennium Development Goals

Poverty & Hunger
Poverty rates are falling in
Asia, while the poor in sub-Saharan Africa are getting poorer. With urban populations growing faster than housing and jobs, about 1 billion people live in slums where basic sanitation (e.g., drinking water & toilets) are inadequate. Millions more are hungry in Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Half the children under age 5 are malnourished.

Environmental Sustainability
Sustainable development as a national policy has been adopted by most countries, but positive effects on the world’s environmental resources remain minimal. The poor in developing countries often depend on the natural resources around them for their livelihood.

United Nations

Global Cooperation
The developed countries (signatories to the Millennium Declaration setting forth the Millennium Development Goals) have not achieved their commitments / targets. Developing countries, in order to ensure the achievement of their own development goals, need more aid, debt relief, trade opportunities, transfer of technology from the developed countries.

I’m not sure what you are saying: “The poor in developing countries often depend on the natural resources around them for their livelihood.”

Hasn’t that always been true? The problem comes when countries get into industrial production – that’s where the pollution and disproprotionate use of resources comes from.

  2. Ren Garcia says:

The distinction is that the “haves” can find employment or set up businesses. The “have-nots” & “have-little” depend on the commons (e.g., wood-gathering in the uplands, fishing in municipal waters, etc).

As you perceptively observed, industrial production takes over the commons (corporate logging, trawling, etc) using resources beyond sustainability.

  3. Aditi Mehra says:

Yes the goals are all set…
    1. End Hunger
    2. Universal Education
    3. Gender Equity
    4. Child Health
    5. Maternal Health
    6. Combat HIV/AIDS
    7. Environmental Sustainability
    8. Global Partnership

But with the years passing away and lack of awareness among especially the developing nations..the execution is becoming difficult..

This year the target being the Indian state where poverty thrives whole heartedly..The MDG will be implemented with full-tone..

  4. Ren Garcia says:

    Aditi, you are absolutely correct.

In the Philippines, the MDGs are known only to the bureaucracy, and then only to a few.

  5. Aditi Mehra says:

    Ren..,
Why only Philippines, all the developing nations are on the reign.
Here in India i have voluntarily undertaken the task of awareness creation.
I believe if we don’t no one will.
