Some Employers Seem To Really Get Telecommuting

As I wander through thousands of job postings to find true work-in-your-pjs gigs for writers, bloggers, editors, etc., I’m often amazed at the number of jobs I know could be done remotely, yet the prospective employer makes it clear they won’t even consider a telecommuting option. When you think about it, very few writing, editing and blogging jobs need to be done onsite. With email, fast internet connections, and the ease with which we can send documents back and forth, writing remotely only makes sense. Yet many employers hang onto the notion they must be able to see someone in their office to believe the work is getting done.
Fortunately many employers do recognize telecommuting makes sense for writers, and some are able to communicate that well in their ads. My favorite so far is the ad that says, in part, “(work)… can be done remotely (though presence in our … office is welcomed).
Isn’t that lovely? I can do the work at home, or know I’ve got space in their office if, for some reason I prefer that. I just love choices like this and wish we had way more employers / clients who felt this way.

I totally agree with you on this. Hopefully more employers will realize the benefits of telecommuting for both the employer and the employee, or at the very least offer the option when possible.
It’s so odd to me that more managers don’t recognize how telecommuters can cut their costs and make them look good… we may need another generation.
I have noticed this phenomenon a lot myself. I will see a great freelance gig, but the option to work from home does not exist even though there is absolutely no reason for the writer or blogger to be in the office. Ah, silly employers.
I’ve noticed this in the past, but I pay more attention to it now since I’m working as a freelance writer.
Yes, Opal, freelancing does tend to focus me on this too.
So true. Loads of editors and managers would get a lot more work done AND boost revenue, if they start considering telecommuting a viable option.
