Some Malware Funkiness – What’s an .EFW File Type?

Doing the weekly updates and maintenance of the computers around the office I think I’ve found a computer with a virus or malware.

The problem though is that nothing I’m using to scan both offline and off are finding anything.

When I try to download and install an update for Lavasoft’s AdAware application I’m prompted to download this aaw2007.1.2D0D17.efw file. What’s an EFW file? Every other computer I go to prompts to download the file with an .exe file extension.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can figure out what’s causing this and fix it or what I should be looking for so I can accurately remove the problem?

The anti-virus software is renaming the file: http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/efw

That’s excellent Lori! Thanks for sharing that information.
