Sonic Rivalry Heats Up

Well this was a nice surprise. Sega have announced a brand new original Sonic title for the PSP in the form of Sonic Rivals. It’s being developed by BackBone Entertainment, which will their first effort with the series. We’ll no doubt hear more at E3, but for now the screenshots are looking pretty cool.

The British Gaming Blog is a little worried:

Think of it as running out of ideas, taking a similar name to Sonic Hereos, and making a sort of… rivals… mode… game… and some cards like in Sonic Battle. With Sega’s recent track record with Sonic games, it’s not hard to be a bit worried about how this one will turn out.

That may well be, but I for one am pretty excited that Sega are still keen to push out more Sonic titles, even what with the current lull in interest brought on by some pretty horrific handling of the series. If only Sonic Team took more control over the character they made a star.

i think there is a great chance for there to be head to head rivals and a three way game of doing a three way story of sonic shadow or even silver.

  1. [...] Contrary to what was said in the previous post, Jeux France has the goods yet again with some great magazine scans of the next-gen Sonic offering, Sonic The Hedgehog. The last editions of the official magazines Xbox and PlayStation reveal us of all new images of the next shutter of Sonic the Hedgehog on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. One learns as well as the play developed by Sonic TEAM will be playable on line and than it will give a real impression of speed. A system of change of time will be also available, but we do not know yet if that will affect the gameplay. Sonic, more blue and realistic than ever, should also have new movements of the Breakdance style in particular for the engagements. The title, which gives finally the impression of a return to the sources of the series, will be presented at the time of E3 2006 in Los Angeles in a few days. [...]

  2. [...] MattG from Press The Buttons seems to be having a problem with the recently announced Sonic Rivals: Dear Sega: please stop. You’ve gone and announced Sonic Rivals for the Sony PlayStation Portable which is essentially just the multiplayer race segments from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic Rush. I don’t know how to break it to you, but there wasn’t much of anything fun about those old multiplayer segments when they were just a piece of the main Sonic experience. [...]
