Speed Run: Sonic The Hedgehog

Dear Jared,
I’m unhappy.
I mean, no disrespect to you Jared Andurilz, but you’re only just older than the game itself. How in the name of all that is good and proper have you found the time to attempt this speed run 37,000 times? Was that a typo? Thirty seven thousand?
Don’t get me wrong, you’ve done a great job, but this really hurts… I’m named after the guy and I can’t play Sonic like that… But you’ve got to fess up, because I know that the site you submitted this staggering performance to allows tool assisted speed runs. I saw what you did in Scrap Brain act 1… And your Green Hill act 3 is, let’s be frank, stupid fly. I just can’t help but wonder if you used some kind of slow down thing for any of it…

I guess it wouldn’t make me feel any better anyway even if you had cheated your way through, which isn’t what I’m saying, I just want you to know what I’m going through as a direct result of your actions. I mean, how the hell did you skip past Robotnik in Labarynth 3? I feel awful… Just awful…
I’ve been playing that game for nearly as long as you’ve been breathing, I changed my name to honor the guy and now you come along and take all that away from me?
I want you to watch it again by either following this link or watching it in the handy YouTube player below here… I want you to watch it and think of me and my brittle little soul…
I respect your efforts, and I am genuinely astounded, but that doesn’t change the fact I’m upset.
Yours sincerely,
Jonic Linley.

I’ve seen you do the first level of Sonic in some absurd time – unassisted. You told me how fast you could do it, turned on the console and did it. Then you did it again. Then again. I don’t see how that could be beat without the use of time bending powers. Or with them for that matter.
Thanks man, it’s good to know I’ve got a friend as I go through this horror.
Just for the record my record is on the first level of Sonic 2. The absurd time of which you speak was 23 seconds…
Just a few weeks ago I got it down to 20.
Having said that there are people claiming 19 seconds… It’ll take me a while, but I’ll do it :o)
I recorded this at normal speed. Tool-assisted means it was played on an emulator for PC. In this video I recorded with Gens. (I’m sure you’ve heard of it). All the bugs that were used in this recording can be found at http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/907S.html. I just realized my re-record count was just short of 35,000. Sorry about that XD. The scrap brain 1 bug is in the original programming. I’m surprised you never found it. I hope that link answers your questions.
I’m going to be hosting another speedrun on youtube of Sonic The Hedgehog 2. This one isn’t done by me, but a friend. It’s also emulated. Give it a look if you want.
Oh and now I’d like to take this chance to apologize to you Jonic. If I knew there where people dedicating themselves so full-hearted to Sonic I probably wouldn’t have released the run. If I were you I’d keep at it. Make a true genesis speedrun. As you probably know this game is considered cursed, and thousands of speedruns have been attempted and given up on halfway through. You sound like the kind of person who deserves to truly break that curse; not on a flimsy emulator, but on an original consol. Don;t give up yet ;-D.
