A Nurses Interview

One long time registered nurse on interviewing for a nursing job:

In today’s health-care world, there are many positions available for nurses.  Once you decide on a career path and have arranged an interview, make a list of your questions that can be asked during the interview.  On a recent interview, I found the following suggestions to be very helpful:

Job titles are sometimes misleading.  If this is a position where you are unclear of the detailed responsibilities, request a job description so you can determine if you are comfortable with the role.  In one hospital, a Care Manager may coordinate patient care with a multi-disciplinary team whereas at another hospital, the Care Manager may focus primarily on discharge planning.  Read the job description after the interview so that you can make an informed decision in anticipation of the job offer.

Ask how long the other nurses have been in their respective roles and their sense of team building.  This will help gauge whether or not the nurses have job satisfaction.  If this is a relatively new position, ask the interviewer that prompted the position and any details that may help you determine how the role will develop over time.  Knowledge about the other nurses’ years of experience compared and how you rank may assist you in negotiating salary within a realistic range.  Sometimes finding a position that pays less but offers more personal satisfaction is a trade-off you may need to consider when balancing work and play.
