Tens of thousands of stolen identities have been found by spyware researchers from Webroot Software. It is believed that these identities were collected by a new Trojan that the company is calling Trojan-Phisher-Rebery.
The information was found on a password protected FTP (file transfer protocol) server in the US that is believed connected to the Trojan. The FBI is investigating the information collected by the Trojan that was installed from the web site teens7(dot)com.
Discovered on April 25, the Trojan is installed using the “drive by downloads” method. In this method “software vulnerabilities in Web browsers are exploited so that malicious software can be pushed down to the machine running the Web browser, usually without any warning to the computer’s owner.”
The FBI believes that an individual set up the Trojan probably without the knowledge of those running the web site.
It is believed that there are over 12,000 infected computers in the US alone.
