Stafford to Lions, maybe

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Matt Stafford will come into Detroit next Tuesday and the Lions will put him through the paces. If he survives, then Matt Stafford will be the number one pick in the draft and the new leader on Schwarz’s Lions.

Mathew Stafford to become a Lion?

Mathew Stafford to become a Lion?

Are we sure the Lions won’t be picking a tackle?

Lions coach Jim Schwartz didn’t say so in as many words in the salty sea air of Dana Point, Calif., on Monday during the NFL owners’ meetings. But the Offbeat would bet as sure as the swallows return to Capistrano, Stafford is Schwartz’ guy. Schwartz and the Lions brass have broken bread with Stafford. They have studied three years’ worth of game tape and probably watched some home movies of him, too.

They took Stafford to Allen Park —hopefully apologizing for the pot holes along the way on the Southfield Freeway — and watched his pro day at Georgia. Short of studying his baby book, the Lions know more about Stafford than probably any draft pick they’ve ever considered.

Coach Jim Schwartz believes in the quarterback position as the centerpiece to his Lions and Stafford is his man. The Lions want to get Matt signed before the draft and thus elude the JaMarcus Russell debacle in Oakland two years ago.
