Stars staying in contention with defense

A W-L record of 5-4 is probably not where many (including writer man here) expected the San Antonio Silver Stars to be at right now, but alas, here we are with the Stars fighting for the fourth spot in the West. As Terrance Thomas of the San Antonio Express-News puts it, though, it’s all built around coach Dan Hughes‘ defensive teaching and the Stars’ ability to perform that’s keeping them in the fight early on.

So how can a team that is 13th out of 14 teams in the WNBA in scoring (70.8) and field-goal shooting (39.1) be in position to contend for first place?

For the Silver Stars, it’s quite simple. Defense.

They are holding opponents to 42 percent shooting, including 29.6 on 3-pointers, and 71.1 points per game. Their 3-point defense is the second best in the league, and their scoring defense is third. They are sixth in field-goal defense.

One other note from TT @ the SAEN: Becky Hammon’s “Outside The Lines” piece is scheduled to air at 8:30 a.m. this Sunday.
